Marte Visser is a Dutch portrait photographer who follows her passion by travelling the world to photograph people that inspire her. This ranges from buddhist monks in the Himalaya, climate researchers in the arctic to celebrities like Willem Defoe, Debbie Harry and Marina Abramovic. Most recently she started exploring what the conception of a portrait actually is and picked up making portraits of animals as well, in the tradition of the British painter Sir Edwin Landsheer. ‘ Basically if there is a soul, you can make a portrait of it’.
While on assignment to the Northpole region in 2016 and 2017 for ‘Het Financieele Dagblad’ and ‘Het Parool’, she saw the devastating effects of climate change on that region. After returning to the Netherlands she founded ‘The Time is now Foundation’, which promotes education about climate change and sustainability in Dutch high schools. In June 2019 she will return to the arctic to accompany climate change researchers for her foundation and on assignment as a photographer for the Dutch newspaper ‘De Volkskrant’.
